The SB-30 headset mics deliver a mic-level input, so you shouldn't get
much of anything with it. You need line-level input. We had about 50 of
these headsets originally and almost all of them fell apart. We used
the Mac's built-in omni mic.

Since then, we have been outfitting all of our student stations with
the Plantronics DSP 500 USB headset mic. Its unidirectional mic picks
up very little ambient and peripheral noise, it has mic mute and volume
control on the cord, and works out of the box in OS 9 or X beautifully.
We're very happy with them. They also seem farily durable. Just be sure
you select "External Mic USB Audio" in the Sound control panel as the
input device. These headsets list for about $149 but we got them for
$65/ each from Amazon and CDW.
