Playing video from a DVD may require decoder software such
as WinDVD -- can the laptop show the video on the built-in
screen?  If not, you need such software.

Yes, this is important to test but there are also some
laptops that will NOT output the external video connector
unless the monitor/projector is "hooked up" (maybe even on)
at boot.

Sometimes you can save rebooting by "hibernating/waking" them
after plugging in the video display.
