------------------
TiVo is great, but there is a major difference between the current "Series 2" boxes and the older "Series 1" boxes. TiVo's HD operating system is Linux-based, and accessible, but none of the information I've been able to find on-line or in print indicates that you can hack a fully functional "back door" into a Series 2 TiVo box and access the video directly as files, while this apparently *is* possible with the older models. There are a variety of resources on-line about hacking TiVo, and I've seen a book at B&N on the subject as well, but if you have a Series 2 box, most of the best hacks described just won't work.

For digitizing video onto HD, I use a $200 Synchrotech Datavideo DAC-100 box (http://www.synchrotech.com) to take analog video from any source (I've tried it successfully from live TV, VCR, TiVo, video camera, and DVD as output sources) via regular RCA cables or S-video, and converted it to DV and sent it along via FireWire to my Mac (does Windows, too), where I do my basic editing in iMovie, then burn a DVD with iDVD. I'm not sure what I'd try for setting up a timed recording when away from the machine (a la VCR), since iMovie is apparently not AppleScriptable, however.

Cheers,
Margo

Hello. We have some instructors who record off air broadcasts to VHS for
use in class. I am looking for a way to capture these broadcasts
directly to a HD (e.g. Tivo?) I want to avoid having to digitize the stuff
from VHS. Does anyone have suggestions for how to do this? Joseph
