Greg,

No. Once someone owns a CD, then they have the rights to play it back
anywhere. The codes set by the computer manufacturers are to follow that
trade agreement. They are not law. 

Your response to me got CC'ed to the list serve and this is one response
to that query:

Boy, Hollywood and the RIAA would love to have us believe that. They have
intimidated too many people into giving up their Fair Use rights as it is
without our giving more away unasked. 
Once I own a DVD I can play it on a wind-up Victrola if I want.
