------------------
Laura,

All the IPA characters in the SIL Keyman keyboard come from typing a base
letter plus one or more symbols (often =, <, and >). It is indeed confusing
because when you type using the so-called "IPA Unicode 1.0" keyboard,
nothing looks different. The documentation explaining how the keyboard works
is carefully concealed in the file called Release Notes.pdf in the
Documentation folder.

Best wishes,
Rick Kunst
