Hi Joseph -- At UCLA the lab classrooms available to language instructors
are scheduled using an online scheduling program called "Athena". Those
instructors who wish to hold regular weekly sessions in a lab classroom are
required to make their request in advance of the quarter in question and the
lab managers then parcel out the labs to each requestor based on when the
request was submitted but also trying to distribute the classroom
availability around (so that the same few instructors don't book up the labs
and preclude their use by other instructors). We have enough classrooms (5)
that make it possible to accommodate just about everyone's request, with
slots left over for one-off requests. All one-off requests during the
quarter are handled strictly online using Athena, since this program allows
the requestor to see what the classroom availability is BEFORE making
his/her request.

I am revisiting scheduling policies for our Language Lab's Classrooms.
At present each day is set aside for a specific language or languages.
e.g., Mondays - Spanish, Tuesday - Italian, French, etc. This less
than
perfect system was put in place because all available times were being
reserved in advance by a handful of instructors. I would very much
appreciate hearing about how other labs handle scheduling of classrooms
in
their labs. Joseph
