Joseph,

Here at the University of Hawaii we have two computer labs, a Mac Lab with
17 computers and a PC Lab with 23 computers. One computer in each lab is
reserved for the lab monitor and a second computer in each lab serves as the
presentation computer and connected to an LCD projector. Reservations for
use of the labs for classes is done on a first come, first served basis.
Instructors e-mail their requests in and the requests are filled in the
order in which they were received. Instructors may reserve the labs on a
regular basis for the entire semester. We also have the schedule available
on-line on our website so instructors can first check to see if the lab is
available before they make their requests. When the labs are not in use for
classes, they are available for drop-in use by students. We use a
scheduling program developed with Microsoft Access.

I also have found that there are a handful of the same instructors that
reserve the labs semester after semester. These instructors teach Hawaiian,
Chinese, Japanese, Tagalog, Linguistics, ESL and Second Language Studies.

We also have two class labs with 30 carrels each and a Tandberg IS-10 dual
teacher console. These also are reserved on a first come, first served
basis using e-mail requests. Other activities such as video showings or
slide showings may also be done in these labs as well. The schedule for
these labs is also available on-line.

You may go to our computer lab website to take a look at our reservation
system and on-line schedule:

and to our Language Learning Center website for the reservation and on-line
schedule for our other facilities:

I am revisiting scheduling policies for our Language Lab's Classrooms.
At present each day is set aside for a specific language or languages.
e.g., Mondays - Spanish, Tuesday - Italian, French, etc. This less than
perfect system was put in place because all available times were being
reserved in advance by a handful of instructors. I would very much
appreciate hearing about how other labs handle scheduling of classrooms in
their labs. Joseph
