An answer, a question, and a comment

ANSWER: I still miss the old "Simple Sound" and have been using
AudioX downloaded from http://www.realmacs.co.uk
However, I cannot find the download for AudioX 1.0 that was free and
http://www.realmacs.co.uk redirects you to
http://www.realmacsoftware.com/ where you can only find Audio X3
which isn't free ($20). I have never used AudioX 3.
AudioX 1.0 is very easy to use and produces a QT file.
I am attaching a test file to this e-mail message.
I compress QT files with QT Pro ($30)

When I first used AudioX however, I found it strange that contrary to
usual, you must first choose where you are going to save the file
(e.g., desktop) BEFORE you can record.

QUESTION: can one still get a free version of AudioX?

COMMENT: PCs have a free recording tool. Macs should too if they
want to keep their reputation as the better platform for multimedia.
Any comments or suggestions?
Francoise
