The information I've found says otherwise, but I haven't tested the unit myself for it yet.  According to http://www.area450.com, a website devoted to Sampo DVD players, the DVE612 & DVE612(N) models will play the following formats:

     "DVD/DVD-R*/DVD-RW*/SVCD/VCD/CD/MP3 (*confirmed by Sampo Taiwan Aug 2002)"

In addition, the DVE612(N) will play:

     "JPEG/MPEG/MPG/VOB (confirmed by owner Dec 2002)"
