I recently purchased a Daiwoo 5800 DVD player from Sam's Club. It's
listed as playing only region 1, but will actually play other regions if
the 'secret code' is entered. A colleague of mine has used it
successfully for German DVDs (region 2 I believe and definitely PAL) and
has played them successfully on an American TV.

It cost $80.00 so I suspect that qualifies as inexpensive.

It's worked fine for me so far but I haven't had it that long.

I'm not sure about the legal issues of multiregion players, I'll let
others speak to that.
