We've sent Canon XL-1 and GL-1 cameras to France and Argentina ... no
problems with durability or performance. Another plus is that with FireWire
connectivity, you can take a laptop along and have a mobile editing studio
for rough cuts, at the very least.

I am not so sure the DV cameras are fragile.
I have sent two old Sony DCR-TRV8 cameras all over the world with faculty
and although some of them come back a bit scratched, they still work. The
real advantage is the picture quality. You can clearly see all the details
that get lost in analog.
What experience have others had with digital cameras?
