Ahem.  I was going to stay out of this one, but I just
can't resist <grin>.

A number of us have been in some variation of the
situation you've described at one point or another on
our careers, and could show you battle scars and tell
fierce war stories (the metaphor is deliberate). These
positions that are neither fish nor fowl sometimes
work out okay until there's a workload / performance
evaluation / reporting structure issue, then things
get dicey.  I know of folks who've been told that
"staff" policies apply to them in certain situations,
but that "faculty" policies apply in other
circumstances. You can see how this gets confusing and
uncomfortable.

The good news is that many people have been able to
work something out. Peggy's given some great
suggestions, and there are many of us around who have
been through the process she describes. You've got a
great resource in LLTI for this kind of research.

If your situation continues, though, keep in mind that
you have (I hope) a legal contract for work, and
whatever kind of contract you have implies certain
rights, privileges, and expectations, as well as a
formal process for revisiting your position & being
evaluated. People can't pick and choose which set of
policies and procedures to apply to your position just
because it's more convenient. That's neither fair nor
legal, and if need be a visit to your friendly
university attorney would convince anyone who thinks
otherwise of the legal ramifications.
