Hello Marianna

In reply to your situation, I will tell you what my position is at
Northeasten Illinois Univeristy. I work as a full time Civil Service staff
member. There are many part time instructors who do the same and teach a
class or two.

The lab used to be run by full time faculty in the 1970s and they asked the
state to create a civil service staff postition when the professor/director
was too busy to do both. Of course, the requirements were a BA in any
language (which is what I got hired on) and the approprate decrease in
salary from a PHD but at least I am doing one job and getting paid for one
job.

I suggest you check with your department head and initate the process with
your human resources dept to create a staff position. Then get the FL dept
to hire you as a part time faculty as well. Half of our PT faculty work
elsewhere in the university and they get two paychecks.

I don't know what the procedures are at NGSU but Education seems to be
evolving into running on the Corporate Capitalist mode. In my opinion it is
like trying mix vinager and oil. State colleges were the last bastion of
true Socialism left in the world. Everyone wants to save money and get
people to do two jobs for the price of one.

I may be one of the last few lucky ones but my salary is for substanance.
Chicago is not a cheap city to live in.

Good luck
Tom Griffin, Director,
Foreign Language Lab, NEIU
