-------------------
Our institution is currently working to provide "salary equity" for all faculty and staff. Basically this means that an appointed committee has investigated what the national average salary is for each category of employee on campus. After one year working on this, the committee reported back that, for several positions they were unable to find a comparable category at any institution in the US. This brings me to my plea to the group, since I was one of those individuals for whom no comparable position was found. Right now I am trying to gather some statistics of my own to present to the "salary equity committee" and would welcome input that any of you might be willing to offer. It may be that my situation at this institution is unique, but I believe that many of us who direct technology facilities for language departments in reality fulfill many functions for many entities and that the requirements of our jobs may have much more in common than not.
I hold the position of "Instructional Technology Specialist" and am categorized as professional staff. I am based in the Modern Languages department, direct the LRC and am teaching one German course per semester. Those assignments constitute 75% of my official responsibilities; the remaining 25% "belongs" to the College of Liberal Arts in general, with each successive Dean of the College re-interpreting specifically what that 25% means. Part of the problem, I believe, lies in the fact that when I accepted the position here there was no detailed description of my job; rather the description has shifted and evolved as the needs and desires of certain individuals have received greater (or lesser) priority.
If you would be willing to share information re: your job description as well as salary range, term of contract, etc., I would be very grateful if you could contact me.
Thanks in advance for your support,
Louise
