Sun Microsystems has made StarOffice available to education for the
cost of media and shipping. It reads and writes in MS Office
formats, so sharing files is seamless. Several platforms are
supported.

OpenOffice, in some senses an extension of StarOffice, adds other
options to the same core:

A version of OpenOffice is available for Mac OS X.

These options might meet your needs.
