Here in Oregon (land of no sales tax, regressive property taxes, and
state institutions funded very inadequately funded by the state)
students pay a $75 general technology fee and a $35 College of Art
and Sciences "resource" fee. Our center competes for both of these
pools. To the extent that a unit/dept. is able to show usage,
innovation, and student satisfaction, the return is fairly generous.
It's not like having a guaranteed amount in a recurring budget for
new equipment and personnel, but it ain't bad. And it has spurred
inter/intra departmental tech initiatives. -jeff
