The trick is to register Word as a Chinese application.  In your 
"Applications" folder, look in the "Utilities" folder and double 
click the "Language Register" icon.  Select Chinese from the 
"Language" drop down menu and then click the "Register" button. 
Navigate your way to Word and then click the "Register" button.  That 
should take care of your spacing issue (and also allow you to use 
vertical text!).
