Muy amigo Ron,
Greetings from the other "snoose" land of the Norsks!
Marcia and I were conversing the other day and wondering how much
sweat was flowing from the Red River Valley these days, especially
with MWALL on the horizon!
Well, as I just read your recent LLTI posting, I was reminded that
this past Friday when the Luther faculty had their fall faculty
days, the Dean of the College called us aside with a "request": that
both of us travel to SCANDINAVIA (!) during that time. Perhaps you
were aware that this past very early spring, the Luther
administration had appointed the two of us as co-directors of the
College's Institute in American Studies for Scandinavian Educators.
The previously couple stepped down after this summer after 10 years
at the helm.
Because of a downward trend in participants over the past 4-5 years,
Marcia and I were given several "charges," one of them being to
increase the number of participants in the coming years. Well, it's
clear that we cannot do that by doing business as usual--putting in
ads in Scandy prof journals, sending over apps with previous
participants, hoping that they alone will generate our group.
A big first step is that we're in the midst of a Web-page project as
there has been NONE to date; that is now changing. See

So we have been asked to hit at least 3 or 4 of the 5 Nordic
countries (most likely not Iceland or Norway--we always get our
"fill" of the latter!) during Luther's fall break and adding a few
days both before and after it. Of course, this is when we had MWALL
last year and when you folks will be hosting it this year.
Both of us are pleased to be told to travel, but the timing is not
exactly ideal from our point of view. Harley Refsal, my colleague in
Norsk here has been to the Fargo/Moorhead area nearly every fall for
the big Norsk fest there and has always raved about it. Marcia and I
were really fired up about it and had been thinking about what you
might need help with--recall we sent you an earlier message way last
fall or winter. Indeed had even checked out some places to stay that
Harley had recommended--not just the motels you listed. But now we
get put on a plane for LLOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGG travel and at a
hurried pace!
Shoot, I was hoping I might have been able to adapt the Decorah Troll
Tour to some kind of northern prairie scenario.
Well, we wish you a super conference; we know that you'll have fewer
hassles that we did with regard to travel (God, even Read couldn't
find us!), having a commercial airport and all the amenities of the
"big city." And we will keep you abreast of our wanderings,
stumblings, and mumblings as we wend our way through Scandinavia.
