Thank you all for your assistance.

With your help,I think I've got it figured out. Combination of things, but
mostly recording at the wrong sampling and levels. Most were using the
default of 8khz, needs to be a good 44 khz to sound ok. Also needed a decent
program to record into, we will be buying CoolEdit or SoundForge. 

I do appreciate your help.

OK; this is perfectly possible.

Even with the cheapest soundcards you can get acceptable sound quality. But:

- The original tape should be good. Invest in good quality microphones,
tape recorder, and tape.

- Take the time to experiment with sound card settings.

- Make sure the contacts of sound card, tape recorder and cables are not
corroded. If they are rarely used, this tends to be the case.

- What about the speakers? (Headphones?) Computer speakers are, in general,
not top of the bill, so it might just be the play back quality that's
unacceptable.
