I'm not doing the conversions, so I don't know the details.  But I believe that we are converting to WAV format first, then compressing to MP3.  We keep the WAV files (with the complete digital information of the original) as originals burned on CDs, and use the MP3s for student use.

If you rely on the MP3s for future use (i.e., as masters, in place of the analog masters), you may not have enough digital information for other formats, compressions, etc.

Hi Jim,

We are in the process of converting analog audio to digitl in exacly the same
way.  What we have found is the following:

    1.    Best to convert directly to MP3 files ( they take up much less
spage-approx. 1.2mg per minute of recording)
    2. Convert files using the 160kbps for better sound quality.
    3. We are using a very inexpensive software to perform our conversion and
attaching a good qaulity tape recorder/player to the PC via audio cable.  The
software we are currently using is called MusicMatch jukebox version 7.2.  You
can download the freeware from the home page at www.musicmatch.com.  The basic
program is freeware, to get the package needed for our purposes you can upgrade
for about $20.00.
