OK; this is perfectly possible.

Even with the cheapest soundcards you can get acceptable sound quality. But:

- The original tape should be good. Invest in good quality microphones,
tape recorder, and tape.

- Take the time to experiment with sound card settings.

- Make sure the contacts of sound card, tape recorder and cables are not
corroded. If they are rarely used, this tends to be the case.

- What about the speakers? (Headphones?) Computer speakers are, in general,
not top of the bill, so it might just be the play back quality that's
unacceptable.
