>Subject: IALLT'03 Program Committee - ONE CALL FOR MWALLT

The IALLT'03 Program Committee seeks one person to work
for approximately six weeks (mid-Oct to early Dec, 2002),
to help put together the program for the IALLT biennial
conference.

The next conference will be at the University of Michigan
at Ann Arbor, June 17-21, 2003. One of the five people on the
committee will be drawn from the host region, i.e., from MWALLT,
the MidWest Association for Language Learning Technology.

If you:
  - are a member of MWALL;
  - are _not_ currently serving in some official
         capacity in the IALLT organization;

... you might be the person for the job!

---------------------------------------------------
What is involved?
---------------------------------------------------
The work is fairly intensive and interesting.
Total time involved 3-4 hours per week for 6 weeks.
For the strong of spirit, options for continued involvement abound.

For three weeks, committee members:
    1. Read abstracts submitted for presentation proposals. Usually the
    committee receives about 120 proposals. Abstracts are 250 words in length;
    everyone reads everything.
    2. Vote Yes/No/Maybe on each proposal (in a blind review).

For three additional weeks, committee members:
    3. Engage in 3-4 conference calls, usually lasting less than two hours
    each, to discuss the merits of proposals.
    4. Pick favorites and make suggestions for other conference program
    content.

---------------------------------------------------
Why should I consider this bit of volunteerism?
---------------------------------------------------
Professional development - it is a great way to learn what cutting-edge work
is taking place where.

Networking - it is a rich networking resource, to learn who is out there
doing work that interests you.

Lab management - it can be an excellent source of inspiration for
language labs administrators.

Organization - this is a well-oiled machine; the committee takes a reasonably
professional and efficient approach to the execution of this big task.

Conference skills - maybe you have already discoverd that you enjoy this kind
of events-organizing work and would be interested in doing it on a grander
scale.

Collegiality - the committee is comprised of people like you!

This job is not:
- paid
- for someone who is dangerously overworked already
- for people who are hesitant to express their opinions!
- for non-MWALLTers

If you have been wishing you could get involved in IALLT somehow but were not
sure how to do it, this is your lucky day!

best,
