Hola Silvia!

We are a small women's college - with about 600 full-time students, and a
few thousand evening and weekend students.

Although independent, I also report to the chair of our Classical and Modern
Foreign Languages department. I am the only full-time person assigned to the
lab, and I have around 6 student workers I hire to assist me during the Fall
and Spring semesters.

The lab has it's own budget and codes, and operates in support of the
foreign language classes, as well as classes in our English Language
Institute. I meet regularly with the foreign language chair and the director
of the ELI to go over lab issues, use, and materials. Were any facility
issues to arise, I would defer to the director of International Studies,
where all our our language, ELI, and lab facilities reside. For computer
issues (we have a digital lab) - the IT help desk. However, when it comes
down to annual reports, salary reviews, etc., the chair of the language
department is my boss.

As for job descriptions, we really just play it by ear. The position of
full-time Language Lab Coordinator was created only two years ago, and I am
the first person in the position.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. I'd love
to hear what you find out from other schools, as well!
Good luck!

-Julie

Hello,
I am interested in finding out how the Foreign Language Centers are
operated, staffed and the line of supervision used at the organizations
where your members are employed. I am most interested in community colleges
and small campuses but I will want to know these criteria from anyone who
would like to respond.
I am presently independent, reporting to the chair of the Department of
Languages and Literature, Foreign Language and Humanities. What are other
institutions doing in this respect? What are the requirements in the job
description and who do the foreign language laboratory coordinators report
to?
Thank you for your assistance,
Silvia
