I don't have an old PC around but you should be able fix all the errors
with the replace command.
First, select one of your odd characters and choose copy. Then go to the
find and replace menu and paste the oddity into the find section. Type the
character you want to change tham all to in the replace with box and click
replace all.
Needless to say, you have made more than one back-up of the document before
you start anything like this.
