Here is the "Blue-ray disc" announcement issued from Tokyo, dated 
February 19, 2002.  I really have no idea how far this will go.  The 
fact that Philips and Sony are together is significant.  The fact 
that the global standard of "MPEG-2 Transport Stream" will be used 
along with newly developed (2001) 405nm blue-violet laser are also 
significant.
