It was used.  However, a live medium with little in the way of
recordability in the past was a problem (think about TV without
VCRs) or film.  Short wave radios were popular ways for people
to keep up with FL cultures.

In my own ed. we had the French news from Canada recorded
every day and it was piped into the classroom as conversational
French began.

This was the first topic of discussion every day.

The same recordings were also available via telephone.
