------------------
I agree with Read. (Wow, three sets of caps and three exclamation
points! I think he really means it.) In looking over our records, we
find that we have purchased Destinos twice. The first time,in 1993,
($650+) it was never incorporated into classes, so we re-purposed the
copies and moved the originals into the lending library in order to
save space. (I'll never do THAT again!) Several years later, a new
language coordinator is using Destinos for multiple levels and a
multitude of sections. We were forced in 2000 to buy a new set of
masters ($400+) and a license to duplicate unlimited copies ($1000).
I'm feeling reluctant to fork over an additional $800 AND the labor
costs to digitize. I think Annenberg (not McGraw-Hill; they publish
the book) should be able to provide digital Destinos without
squeezing us yet again. The price of the videos may have been
structured to recapture production (filming) costs, and what appears
to be enormous overhead at Annenberg, But there can't be much cost
involved now in burning DVDs, or even allowing us to download files.

This is an area in which IALLT and its affiliates have some clout, I
think. If we presented our objections on the letterhead of our
international organization, even if only to deplore the practice of
charging again and again for the same content, without staying up to
date with format changes, do you think they'd take notice? It's a
thought...

Ursula
