>Subject: SCOLA notice about pashto

------------------
        For Immediate Release
        McClelland, Iowa
        Feb. 8, 2002

SCOLA is pleased to announce addition of the Pashto language of
Afghanistan to its Channel Two lineup effective immediately.
The 20-part series is produced by Professor Steven Donahue, a
linguist and English language professor at Miami-Dade Community College.
It will feature about 1,000 vocabulary words and also explain the
history, culture and customs of Afghanistan.
The series will air weekly at 9 p.m. each Sunday beginning Feb.
10 on SCOLA's Channel 2. SCOLA plans to use segments of the series
between some programs on SCOLA Channel One also starting in March 2002.
Professor Donahue has also developed software to teach Afghanistan's
most common language by phone or computer. He has sent free software and
workbooks to US senators and to the State Department..
Afghanistan's most commonly used language is in
demand in diplomatic and military circles. Professor Donahue felt
military intelligence specialists could use the lessons to pave the way
for missions in Afghanistan, where about half the population speaks
Pashto.
"Even if you know a couple of words, it opens doors,"
Professor Donahue
said. "It gets you out of that category of being an ugly American."
For soldiers, who have their own training program on his Web site
(www.1usa1.info), words learned could include battlefield (dagar), flag
(bayragh), prisoner (bandi) or bullet (gwaley).
The program allows students to recite and listen to Pashto in
lessons over downloaded computer software or over a toll-free telephone number.
Students can even use voice-recognition software for basic translation
from English into Pashto, and back again.

Professor Donahue can be contacted at 866-534-8531.
