Just thought I'd throw in my usual $.02.

PAL gives a better quality picture than the American standard. Using a 
projector or a multi-standard monitor takes advantage of the extra richness 
of the image. On the other hand, you can buy a multi-standard VCR or DVD 
player that will give you NTSC output if your monitor is NTSC, but the 
image will be less vivid. I try to encourage teachers to use the projector 
in the classrooms.

Re. the DVD players--I don't know if anyone mentioned but I think there's a 
difference between code-free players and players that can actually play all 
the different regional codes as well as the different standards. We have 
something called Odyssey, a player recommended a year or so ago on this 
list. It's played everything I've found to put into it, with output to 
normal (ancient) monitors.
