We use and like ACDSee on the PC side. The auxiliary data (keywords, etc.)
is stored in a proprietary format, but the images are unaffected and so are
easy to transfer. The software stores thumbnails of each image on disk,
making loading the album extremely fast.

The pricing was reasonable, and we were able to purchase licenses in bulk
for our faculty to use. They have both Mac and PC versions.
