This has been discussed often on two of the lists that I follow:  The
archives might help your faculty member.

I am not interested in VCD, but my memory is that you need the
correct/newest versions of QuickTime and Toast, to avoid a known bug.
Many people on the list report success with Mac OS 9.x and the other
software mentioned.
