we do quite a lot of media production in our G4 lab and have used various combinations of headsets/microphones, all-in-one and
separate. 

we've found, after much expense, that the best to date is the Macally usb microphone
(http://www.shipitforyou.com/cgi-bin/sgin0105.exe?TRAN85=Y&GENP=&UID=2001111907170200&T1=M450+1041&FNM=89) which has awesome
pickup and quality fidelity and also has two external jacks, which enable you to plug in headphones, minidisk players, etc. 

for headphones we use sony dynamic stereo headphones which we actually plug into the G4 but could be used in the microphone.
