    This is a brief summary of my efforts to convert a Wordstar 4 for Dos
document to Microsoft Word while retaining both the endnotes and the accent
marks. Microsoft Word 2000, using the converter available from Microsoft,
would convert the document with accents intact but would delete all
endnotes. This was not acceptable since endnotes composed a large portion of
the text. I installed an old copy of Wordperfect 8.0 on Windows 2000 and was
able to convert with the endnotes intact but the accented characters were
deleted.
    Thanks to Allen Rowe from this list, I was able to get the document
converted using Wordstar 1.5 for Windows to a version of Microsoft Word. I
expected this to be an ideal solution but when opened in Word XP on Windows
2000 the layout of the text was damaged and the accents did not convert.
    Thanks also to Richard Kunst for expaining the function of Code Pages
for displaying special characters. This might explain why the accents did
not convert with WordPerfect 8.0 on Windows 2000. The original document was
written using US DOS IBM CodePage 437 encoding. WordPerfect 8.0 was designed
for an older version of Windows (~95) which was more closely linked to DOS
than Windows 2000.
    I eventually tried Wordperfect 7.0 on Windows 95 and it did the
conversion correctly with endnotes and accents intact. . I suspect that the
difference may not be in the version of Wordperfect but due
to differences between Windows 95 and Windows 2000. In any case the last
solution with WP 7.0 on Win95 solved the problem.
