Director of the Drake University Language Acquisition Program

The Drake University Language Acquisition Program (DULAP) is a highly 
innovative response to a clear and vital need for citizens competent in 
languages other than English.  DULAP is designed to ensure that our 
students are able to attain usable communicative competence in foreign 
languages, and that they will be able to design learning paths that 
directly address their individual goals for language learning

Drake University seeks a senior specialist in Second Language Acquisition 
(SLA) and technology as the Program Director.  The responsibilities of the 
Program Director include:
o       Overall program design, implementation, and administration
o       Development, monitoring, and assessment of individualized programs 
of study for each student
o       Design and implementation of general second-language acquisition 
course(s) that prepare students for individualized language learning (i.e., 
to take control of their own language-learning careers)
o       Administration of the language learning component of University$E2s 
International Partners Program
Key characteristics of the DULAP program include:
·       Individualized programs of study (Directed Independent Language Study)
·       Participation in NASILP
·       Partnerships with international institutions
·       A variety of on campus language learning opportunities.
·       Language Enrichment Opportunities featuring Language discussion 
groups, Language Across the Curriculum course sections, Technology-based 
learning, and Virtual language communities.
·       Opportunities for service learning/internships
·       Assessment and Certification
·       Conduct and publish research sophisticated research about DULAP

This is a full-time, 12 month appointment starting as soon as 
possible.  The initial appointment is for three years and will run through 
August 15, 2005.  Further renewals will be possible, based on need and 
accomplishments.   Salary is competitive.

This position requires an energetic, highly motivated individual with 
excellent organizational, analytical, as well as outstanding communication 
and "people" skills.   Applicants must have a Ph.D. or be ABD in Applied 
Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or a foreign language and 
literature; native or near-native ability in at least one foreign language; 
and familiarity with computer applications. Applicants should send a
