Job Opening:
Academic Director, Language Center

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts is searching for a full-time
Academic Director of its Foreign Language Resource Center beginning
September 2002. The Director will be involved in the formation of a
reconfigured center for second language acquisition as well as the
development of a new Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching. The
current Center is to be expanded and reconfigured as the College reassesses
its role and methodology in the teaching of beginning and intermediate
languages. The Director will meet regularly with individual department
language coordinators to form a group responsible for quality and
methodology in language sequences taught in the College. The position of
the Academic Director is divided between the current Foreign Language
Resource Center which reports to the Dean, and one of the following
language departments: French/Italian, German, or Spanish/Portuguese. The
successful candidate will be tenurable in his/her respective department co-
terminus with on-going satisfactory performance of the Director's job. The
Director is expected to work closely with the Five College Foreign Language
Center, a resource cooperatively funded by the University of Massachusetts,
Smith, Amherst Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges, whose director is a
tenured member of the University's department of French and Italian.

Summary:
Reports to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
Able to teach second language pedagogy (both graduate and undergraduate).
Able to teach and coordinate technology in second language acquisition.
Able to oversee language instruction in at least one language area.
Must be tenurable in a language department, rank open.
Must have a doctorate in an appropriate area of specialization; Second
Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Computer Assisted Language
Learning particularly desirable.
Calendar year appointment.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
