Nope, that's the way it is. Below are some of the messages posted to the

FYI (this was reported by a HKMUG member on Macintouch.com):

And here is the origional post:

A Chinese Note

When OS X 10.0 was introduced at the March 24 keynote, there was no
mention of Chinese (even though HK is a Chinese based culture) and OS X
did not provide a Chinese input system. A few months later, Applereleased
a Chinese version of OS X with a Chinese input system. The new OS could
not however be loaded over an English version of OS X. Anybody who wanted
to input Chinese was forced to purchase another copy of OS X. A lot of
people were not happy.

With the introduction of OS X 10.1, nothing seems to have changed. Chines=
e
was completely absent from the keynote. When asked about a Chinese input
system for OS X 10.1, the Apple employee was only willing to state three
things:

The Chinese development is done in the U.S.A. (ie, it's not HK's problem)

OS X 10.0 was a 'Tier 1' OS while 10.0.3 was a 'Tier 2' OS which could
support the input system (but didn't)

Apple HK has no idea if the OS X 10.1 update will include the Chinese
input system, and if or when a separate Chinese OS X 10.1 would be
released.

Basically, it looks like we're going to get bitten again. I would advise
all Hong Kong residents needing the Chinese input system to wait until OS
X 10.1 has been released and see what's actually there before buying it.

A Chinese alternative

On a related note, a non-Apple company has apparently developed their own
Chinese input system which will run on the English version of OS X. They
will be demonstrating the system at the monthly Hong Kong Mac Users Group
meeting next Tuesday. For details regarding the meeting's location, time
and cost, please refer to the Mac Users Group's page.

A hack for installing the Chinese/Korean input stuff from the Asian OS X
into the US OS X can be found at:

Bad news:

From the OS X datasheet released Tuesday 9/25, it appears that version
10.1 continues the linguistic bifurcation of the world begun with previou=
s
releases.

The datasheet lists support for the following languages only: English,
Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

Chinese is not mentioned at all.

This suggests a few questions:

1. Is Chinese support present anyway?
2. If not, how do we get the version of the CD that does support Chinese?
3. Are existing owners of the US version eligible to update to a version
that ships with Chinese or must we buy it at full price?

I don't know the answers.

The 10.1 CD with Chinese hasn't been released yet. No word on when it
will come out, but currently Apple is offering no Chinese OS options at
their online store in Hong Kong, so I would guess that it is coming as
soon as possible. There is still an outside chance that Apple will
straighten out the problem with the release of the second full CD (i.e.,
make it possible to use that CD's installer to add language capabilities
to a system based on the current CD, and vice-versa), and the hack won't
be needed, but I wouldn't count on it.
