Director, Minnesota English Center
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

The Institute of Linguistics, English as a Second Language, and 
Slavic Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts, at 
the University of Minnesota is searching for a Director of the 
Minnesota English Center, appointment start date is negotiable but 
January 2, 2002, is preferred.  This is a 100% time, 12-month, 
annually renewable appointment based on funding and performance, at 
the rank of Program Director.

The Minnesota English Center (MEC) is a well-established intensive 
English program with a highly professional teaching faculty who 
provide language training, academic support and cultural orientation 
to students who plan to study at a university of college in the 
United States or who want to improve their English for personal or 
business reasons.  In addition to teaching English, the MEC seeks to 
introduce students to academic and community life. The MEC is closely 
associated with the university's M.A. program in English as a Second 
Language (ESL). Therefore, teacher-training and language-learning 
research are an integral part of the MEC.  The MEC has evolved a 
culture of participatory management in which administrators work 
closely with office staff, professional teachers, 
teachers-in-training, and the faculty of the M.A. Program in ESL.

Required Qualifications: M.A. degree in English as a Second Language 
(ESL) or related field with an ESL focus; at least three years 
post-M.A. classroom teaching experience in ESL/EFL (English as a 
Foreign Language); at least one academic year of experience directing 
a university-level intensive ESL program.

Desired Qualifications: At least five years post-M.A. classroom 
teaching experience in ESL/EFL; experience directing an intensive 
academic ESL program at a major university; record of scholarly 
activity including publications and/or presentations at professional 
meetings.

Responsibilities:  The Director is responsible for administering all 
MEC programs. Principal duties are to develop the program in such 
areas as teacher development, technology in the classroom, language 
assessment, student counseling, teaching curriculum and materials, 
and classroom research; to administer the day-to-day operation of the 
MEC; to develop and oversee the budget; to develop long-range plans 
in consultation with the staff; to supervise the staff (including 
hiring and staff development); to represent the MEC to other programs 
and departments in the university and to communities outside of the 
University; and to keep current with developments in the field of 
ESL. 

Application requirements: Review of applications will begin on 
October 22, 2001. Interviews are expected to begin in early November. 
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

transcripts of all graduate coursework, three letters of 
recommendation, and up to three samples of administrative, 
instructional, and research activity (e.g., articles, portfolios,
