I really enjoyed Read's solution to the wandering remote problem, partly
because I decided to do the same thing for ours a few months
ago. It was somewhat nostalgic,  feeling as though I was back in the days
of the baling wire, rubber cement and paper clips that we used to use in
the late '60s to keep our labs together and to improvise repairs. In our
new virtual labs we can't do much of that anymore. But guess what, at
least as far as the wandering remotes are concerned, it works!
