------------------
I convert wav files to mp3 using Shuffler Music Converter to save space on
our server. It was freeware a year ago, but I'm not sure it is any longer.
Here's something else I haven't tried yet, but somebody out there might:
Sound Recorder (that's a cool digital recorder that comes with most Windows
'98 versions) has an option for using audio compression, which causes the
sound files to be "crunched" in order to take up less space. Different
formats exist; some use less room, and some sound better than others - here
is where you will have to experiment. To compress a .WAV file, load it into
Sound Recorder. Choose "File" and "Properties," and you will see a button
labeled "Convert Now..." Click on it, and you will have the option of
changing the "Format" and "Attributes" of the sound.

How do we get audio tapes into digital format in the first place? We use
Tandberg Divace software to digitize.

OK, assuming I get the permission of the publisher, how can I digitize
audio cassettes? Is there a way to go from cassette to CD? We're getting
a Tandy lab this Fall but will have limited server space at first.

Many thanks to the Conference organizers - it was terrific.
