I had similar problems with Compaqs.  I had to download the latest driver
from the soundcard manufacturer (Ensoniq).

As for the recording problem, there may be a jumper on the sound card for mic type
(passive vs electret, I believe) ... this is what I ran into as well (older compaq P-75).
