>Subject: converting U-Matic tapes

------------------

Hello,
We're in the midst of a major project copying/converting up to 100
U-Matic tapes to VHS. We have the necessary equipment and have "successfully"
(the quality was OK) copied NTSC U-Matic to NTSC VHS. However,
we have thus far not had success converting PAL U-Matic to NTSC
VHS in one step, although we think this is theoretically possible.

Our setup goes like this:

SONY U-Matic Video Player (VP 7040) set on PAL sending output to:
Panasonic AG-W1 Multistandard Video Cassette Recorder.
The AG-W1 (theoretically) converts the PAL signal to NTSC and records
on VHS.
However, the quality of the image on the converted tape is awful to
the point of being useless. The colors are overwhelmingly blue and
the image is slightly skewed horizontally. When we copy straight
U-Matic PAL to VHS PAL, on the other hand, the image is quite nice.

Notes: We no longer have the manuals for the AG-W1 and there are dozens
of buttons and settings. We use it to convert VHS PAL to NTSC on
a daily basis, however, so it should do this job fine too? The difference
in the VHS conversions is that the original video in that case is coming
from the (PAL, VHS) tape instead of via VIDEO IN (PAL signal from the U-Matic).
Can anyone elighten me as to which buttons should be set how in this case?
Or is this one-step method not possible, meaning we'll have to convert
U-Matic PAL to NTSC PAL and then NTSC PAL to NTSC VHS?

Other questions:
Some of the tapes seem to be "stuck together". We've tried
to FFWD and REW to loosen them but aren't having much luck. Are these
tapes ruined beyond salvation?
Are there head cleaners available for U-Matic VCRs?

I hope this makes some sense and that someone out there can shed some
light.

As always, thanks in advance!
