At Macalester, we have three contact hours with the instructor and one 
required hour with a native speaker.  Additional out-of-class work is 
assigned and some of it must be done in the lab.  We don't track student 
use but they know they will be tested on the information and are good about 
coming in and doing their work.  We try to put as much on-line as possible 
to allow students to work from their dorm rooms at three in the morning if 
they choose.

I don't think overall use of the facility has changed much.  Both the 
facility and staff are an integral part of the language programs and are 
not going to disappear soon.
