Dear LLTI-ers,

I am curious to hear people's reactions to the developments at Drake
University, where the new president has fired the entire languages
department and has orchestrated the abolition of the university's languages
requirement.  Who is this rogue president?  It's David Maxwell, who used to
head up the National Foreign Language Center!  I found out about this from
an internal Goucher College listserv.  The article has been reproduced for
