We have not had the difficulties you mention in your message with our AIWA.
If there is any way I can help you, please give me a call.

We also bought the AIWA and it is a first rate player and recorder. However,
while we can convert PAL to NTSC with this player (the copies are
excellent) it will not (even though the manual says so) convert NTSC to
PAL. I will also not play back SECAM even though the manual says so. It
will play with any TV.

At least that's our findings. It was installed by SONY technicians into our
SONY 900
Lab.
