Barbara,

While I don't claim to be an expert on the subject, I will relate my
experience.

We have two of the Infinity DVD players that have been mentioned on list.
This
DVD player can be set to any one of the six regions or it can be set to
bypass.
In the bypass mode, most, but not all, DVD discs will play. Some DVD discs
have
a coding
scheme that requires the DVD player to be set to a specific region (these
won't
play properly if the player is set to bypass, but will play if the player is
set
to the correct region).

A new DVD release which I believe has the Regional Coding Enhancement is
Patriot. If the Patriot DVD is played in the Infinity player, set to
bypass, a
screen appears stating that the disc will only play on region 1 players.
However, if you set the player to region 1, the Patriot DVD will play.

I believe that some so-called code-free DVD players can only be set to a
bypass
mode while some (like the Infinity) can be set to any of the six regions.
Therefore, you want a player like the Infinity.
