Hi, Folks.
Here at Goucher, our digital language lab is running Windows 98, which is
less secure than NT, in terms of preventing student tampering.
We purchased a product called "FoolProof Security" from Smartstuff Software
(http://www.smartstuff.com) to prevent the kind of tampering that Mary asks
about. FoolProof is very flexible, allowing you to lock and unlock specific
parts of the system, specific executable files, specific control panels,
specific file saving possibilities, etc. It's also quite easy to turn off
the program when you want to install a new piece of software. You just use
the control password, click a little "off" switch on the screen, and the
computer is now open for modifications.
FoolProof allows you to save all the security settings on a network server
or on the individual machines.
We've been very happy with the software, and their technical support people
have been extremely helpful when we run into specific configuration issues.
I have no connection with the company, by the way, other than being really
happy with their product.
