------------------
In the Ellis series we are only using Senior Mastery. It is not part of our main
program but rather available in our Computer Assisted Language Lab as support
practice. Use is recommended by our teachers but ultimately it is the student who
decides whether to use it or not. As we teach language for public administration in
the federal government the video portions do not relate directly to our specific needs
content-wise, however, the exercises of all types are very well done and useful to us.

Our English program is small, therefore, when we acquired the original version it was
set up in a separate room on a stand-alone computer. We had a lot of trouble with it
crashing. Afterward we were not able to acces anything - student or teacher. We never
really found out why it crashed - Ellis itself, our set-up, improper use by teacher or student
were all looked at. It took our technicians a lot of time to get it working again, and again...
crash. To be honest it never worked up to our hopes or expectations.

The second version was installed (free) about a year ago in our multi-media lab but because of
the need for an architectural impact study on our system, LAN band width restrictions and finally
the number of student-users it was again installed as stand-alone (on one computer, one student
at a time). This version, so far, works well (in its limited way) for both students and teachers.
We would prefer that it be available at all our carals and that teachers could acces results
from their offices rather than having to go to the CALL. The cost of setting this up,
however, is not warrented by our client numbers (hence the 'in its limited way' above).

Use today is defined more by our limitations than by the programs. It works well and is a
useful tool used by many students to consolidate their learning.

If you would like more information, please e-mail me. I will try to get it for you.

Dear Colleagues,

I'd like to know if you are familiar, ie, have implemented part of or the
complete Ellis Software.
We're moving into a multimedia lab and the administration has preferred a
self contained course as opposed to different pieces of software and
authoring tools.

How has it worked for you? Does it run on Win NT without glitches?
Are the Instructor Utilities effective ? any pitfalls to be aware of?

I will appreciate your feedback.

Look forward to your replies,
