Currently, the lab at my institutionis undergoing drastic changes.
The postition of Lab Director was reduced to mere representational
functions, his teachig oad was mre than doubled, and a techical
manager was hiredat a $32,000/11 month salary. Director and Lab
Committee were "relieved" of all fiscal resposbilites which was put
into the hands of the newly hired technical manager. Prior to that, a
lab improvement (replacment) plan submitted by the Committee in the
amount $25,000 and prepared by two faculty experts in peadagogy and
CALL was rejected by Department and later by College administrators.
Having had to watch a plan be rejected in less than 24 hours that
took more than a semester to develop and that had been compromised
twice by non-negotiable budget transfers from the lab fee account,
the technical and pedagogical Director resigned, and was replaced by
a technical manager. The technical manger is responsible for
equipment maintenance and student assistant supervision as well as
accounting ($45,000 annual revenue from lab fees). The manager
reports to the departmental administrative authority directly
(specialist in Literature). The role of the Lab Committee is
advisory; it has no fiscal authority; its pedagogical recommendations
are not binding. This survey is to help assess to what extent
disintegrated models of lab leadership and mangement may be becoming
a trend at US Colleges and Universities. By disintegrated I mean,
that managament of the student fee account is not informed by
pedagogical expertise in CALL
