Tutor/Senior Tutor (Level A) - French Studies
Department of French and Italian Studies
The Position: The appointee will teach and coordinate undergraduate French
Studies subjects, including language and contribute to the department's
committee work and research program. The undergraduate program includes all
levels of language from beginners to honours, a range of linguistics subjects,
and literature and culture subjects.
The Person: The successful applicant will have completed or nearly completed a
PhD in the field of French studies; will have native or near-native command of
French; will have specialist knowledge in an area of French studies, be an
active researcher in that area and have a publication record and ongoing
research projects in the field; will have demonstrated ability in tertiary
teaching. The Department has specific needs in the areas of French
linguistics/second language acquisition, pre-19th century literature and
history/culture of 20th century/contemporary France, but well qualified
applicants in any area of French studies are encouraged to apply.
The Benefits: Salary $36,062 - $48,940 p.a. (Tutor/Senior Tutor Level A) plus
employer superannuation contributions of 17 percent.
Employment Type: This is a full time continuing position, subject to a 5 year
probation period. It is available from the beginning of February 2001.

Department of French and Italian Studies at the University of Melbourne

The Faculty of Arts

The Department of French and Italian Studies
The French Section of the Department of French and Italian Studies
offers courses at undergraduate level up to honours, and has masters
and doctoral programs at the post-graduate level. At present there
are 8.75 full-time members of staff for a student load of about 200
EFTSU. The French Section is committed to excellence in all areas of
its activities, particularly research and teaching. The Section's
present strengths are 19th and 20th century French/francophone
literary and cultural studies, and French linguistics.
The Position
The Appointee will be required to contribute fully to the activities
(teaching, research, administration) of the French program within the
Department of French and Italian Studies - as directed by the Head of
the French Section and the Head of the Department.
Selection Criteria
All applicants must provide a detailed application that addresses the

level of responsibility, teaching activities, student numbers.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES
native or near-native competence in French;
completion or near-completion of a PhD;
demonstrated capacity for excellence in teaching of language and
content courses at university level;
demonstrated teaching and research interest in an area of French
studies, preferably French linguistics/second language acquisition,
pre-19th century literature, or history/ culture of 20th
century/contemporary France;
demonstrated experience and ability in administration and
coordination at tertiary level;
demonstrated ability to work both in a team & independently;
the ability to initiate projects in teaching, administration and outreach
DESIRABLE QUALITIES
a demonstrated interest in teaching with new technologies;
a demonstrated research and teaching interest in other areas of
French studies;
a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary studies, in particular
European Studies.
