 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

23rd Annual Language Testing Research Colloquium

 Mariott's Pavilion Hotel
 St Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.
 February 21-24, 2001

 Micheline Chalhoub-Deville, University of Iowa
 Craig Deville, University of Iowa
 Dan Douglas, Iowa State University
 Felicity Douglas, Iowa State University

 THEME: "Language Testing and Technology"

Plenary Speaker: Richard Luecht, University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The Twenty Third Annual Language Testing Research Colloquium will be held at Mariott's Pavilion Hotel in St Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Proposals are hereby solicited for presentations in the following categories: 1) research/argumentative papers, 2) symposia, 3) poster, and 4) "work in progress" sessions. (These are described below).

Preference will be given to proposals that are clearly related to the theme, "Language Testing and Technology". Proposals that integrate qualitative and quantitative research methodologies are encouraged.

 TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS

 1) Research/argumentative papers: This format is best suited to theoretically-oriented presentations, or the presentation of completed research. Paper presentations will be 20 minutes in duration, and will be followed by 10 minutes for questions and comments from the audience. Proposals for presentations of test development should be submitted as poster sessions, while proposals for presentations of research in progress should be submitted under category 4 below.

 2) Symposia: Symposia are presentations that involve multiple presenters on a single theme, and are best suited to the discussion of research and theory. Symposia will be up to two hours in duration, and may include up to four individual presenters.

 3) Poster sessions: Poster sessions provide an opportunity for the presentation of test development projects, new tests, and technological innovations. Each poster presenter will be allowed five minutes during the regular program to introduce his or her project to the audience. The poster presentations themselves will take place during a two-hour time period on one afternoon of the conference.

 4) Work in progress sessions: These sessions will provide an opportunity for the presentation of work in progress and research that is being planned. The idea is that presenters will be able to discuss their unfinished research or research plans with other participants, and receive comments and suggestions on how best to proceed with their research. Each presenter will be allowed five minutes during the regular program to introduce his or her research project to the audience. The work in progress session itself will take place during a two-hour time period on one afternoon of the conference. During this time, the work in progress presenters will be assigned numbered tables in a large meeting room where interested participants may gather for discussion with the presenters. Participants may move among the tables at specified intervals.

PRESENTERS NEEDING SPECIAL EQUIPMENT OR ACCESS TO THE INTERNET

The hotel charges for use of a computer, LCD panel, and especially an internet connection are exorbitant. For this reason, presenters needing to use the hotel's equipment will be asked to pay these surcharges. Final details of the pricing are still being negotiated and will be made available later, but presenters should consider this surcharge. We will have several laptops and a display panel available for no charge, but we can not guarantee compatibility for all presenters. Those presenters planning to use such equipment are strongly urged to bring their own and present from their hard drives rather than from the internet to ensure the success of their presentation.
